<description><![CDATA[i think it's to keep the birds from eating the seed but it might also provide general protection as the grass gets growing.  i haven't bothered when i've seeded on my own, but i had a landscaper do a huge area for us once and he used the hay.  i have to say, his grass grew better than mine. <img src="images/smilies/smile.gif" border=0>]]></description>
