I had the woodpecker problem here. There continued to be more of the birds in time. Wherever there was a place for them to perch their feet they did and started pecking away. I had RBB masonite siding with 1X4 trim and they would perch on the 1X4's. If they heard a hollow sound they went through. I finally had the house stuccoed. There really wasn't any stopping them that I could find.

Too funny. I can picture a guy laying in wait on the porch with his hose, primed and ready to spray. I'd go with the mesh and an exterior covering.

I'd use a combination of scare and retrain. The woodpecker won't be a pet until it stops eating into the value of my home.

Probably the most "environmentally" responsible thing to do would be to retrain the bird. Who knows? maybe you will fall for the woodpecker as a pet instead of a pest! I don't think I would have the patience to do so!

Their are two tactics:
1. Scare.
Spray the woodpecker with the hose each time it shows up.
Play birds of prey tapes.
Hang strips of aluminum foil near the tap site

2. Retrain
Cover the preferred spot with mesh, plastic or nylon.
Add a wood box or metal cylinder that the bird can tap on. Place it far enough away that it doesn't bother you.
Add a woodpecker nest box.
