My dad's house used to have solar water panels, but when they started to leak, he stopped using them.

Germany has a huge solar and wind program. Right now they aren't so popular in the US in residences, but some businesses are starting to add them. The reason is that they rarely produce all your power...but they do produce a lot of power during the hottest part of the day when electricity rates spike. Two advances that companies are researching are a way to build a panel that's several layers thick so there is better absorption and a way to use nanotechnology to create solar paint. Both are incredibly cool, but still a long way off.

I'm curious to know if there is people in here that is using solar power as alternative source for electricity in their home. I live in an apartment in NYC, so that is actually not an option for me, but I'm thinking I would love to have a house powered by solar and wind energy.
