Don't skimp on maintenance, it lets you catch repairs when they are still small.

The National Fire Protection Agency recommends annual cleanings -- the company will also let you know if you need any repairs. You could probably get away with doing it a little less often, but the risk probably isn't worth the savings.

i get mine cleaned once a year too but it sounds like i use it a lot more that you do, probably 2-3 times a week all fall and winter. but, sounds like an area where it's worth erring on the side of caution, right? you don't pay a lot (over $150) do you?

i was told to do it once a year in the late summer/early fall and that's what i've stuck to. my service provider always inspects it too and that gives me peace of mind. every once in a while there's something that needs a little maintenance beyond just a cleaning. edited by cass on 1/31/2007
