This sounds like a scam -- if you clean out your lint tray regularly you should be ok.

Mine had to be changed because it even had little birds growing in there!!! It was replaced by a silver one, even though originally was a plastic white thing. Now works fine. Also, make sure you clean your dryer filter from lint after every cycle. I do it as an automatic thing. That way it doesn't build up.

Here are the warning signs that you need a cleaning...
1. Clothes (especially towels or jeans) take a long time to dry.
2. Clothes are hotter than usual at the end of the drying cycle.
3. Flapper on vent hood doesn’t open when dryer is on.

If you are symptom free, you are most likely home free.

i just upgraded my dryer venting, at the same time i replaced my washer and dryer. here's what i know. if you have white duct work, it is outdated and below code at this point. the newer duct work is silver and is fire-resistant. also, it shouldn't be venting into your garage. that's adding moisture and lots of lint and dust to your garage. Mine ducts outside my house. You need to have a cover on it though, to keep animals out - mine has a flap and a cage-like plastic square around it. i'm not sure how often they need to be cleaned out, or if it is necessary once you have the fire-resistant ductwork. Anyone else know?

What should I know about venting my dryer? I recently got something in the mail about dryer vent/duct cleaning and it said that lint can build up and become a fire hazard. I've never done anything to clean or maintain my dryer ductwork. I have a hose that goes out from the back of my dryer, behind a wall and out into a vent in my garage. Thanks for any thoughts.
