Check out the video home improvement section of your library. A lot of times you can pick up a lot of basics that way. Your first few times out, enlist a friend with a little more experience than you as your consultant.

Depending on the project, you can learn from a book. But it is a good idea to check out Home Depot, since they have everything, they will probably have a class and a video you can take home ant watch to see how is it done.

Talk up your neighbors and see who's the savviest. See if they are willing to give you a hand. Remember, retirees rock!!!! They typically have more free time and if they're widowed they may be lonely. They've also had more time to gain experience. That can all add up to a valuable resource and a potential friend.

JUST DON"T EXPERIMENT ON A WEEKEND! you'll end up paying a plumber double time if you need someone to come bail you out. good luck.

there are free home improvement clinics offered at home depot. i know they cover plumbing. also, you could get a good reference book on plumbing - try this site at http://www.builderssquare.com/shop/results.aspx?Kw=plumbing+books. i have that plumbing 1-2-3 book and it's helpful. good luck.

I need to get up to speed on doing some plumbing projects myself. i don't want to have to use a plumber unless it's for something major. any thoughts on how to learn the basics without flooding my house???
