You want a lock with solid metal components. An easy check is to feel for weight -- heavier locks are generally sturdier. Steel is always a good bet.

You'll also want to look to see how far into the wall the bolt goes.

Most of the time you use a single cylinder deadbolt -- a key on the outside a knob to turn on the inside. Sometimes you add a double cylinder (the inside must be opened with a key too) -- when it's near a window. That way someone can't break the window and reach in to gain entrance. You need to check fire codes before you install, however.

How do you pick a good deadbolt? There sure do seem to be a lot of options.
