Unless one of you has a knack for it, it might be better to start out assembling prefab furniture. It might even save your marriage.

A fun activity for couples is to build furniture together. You can usually attend classes at hardware stores to pick up pointers and then have a go at it.

You can pick up some nice pieces fairly cheaply at estate sales too. Even stuff that needs to be refurbished can be worth the effort, because it gives your room some flair.

I visited a friend that made a couch for the extra room and I loved it! It is gigantic, and it is a piece of wood, 4' x 9' sitting over old tires that she painted in different colors. Then on top of it she placed a huge cushion that is the size of the wood. She made it herself filled with foam rubber. And on top of it, another 2 very big cushions but smaller in size. And then at least 20 2x2' pillows, all different colors that match the whole thing. The advantage is that works as a sofa/bed and everything you can imagine, her kids love it, and up to 7 people can be sitting there without any problems at any time. But it is too big for my taste and my space!

A nice compromise is to buy mostly mid-range stuff and save up for a few more expensive pieces. That way you don't spend the first few years of home ownership eating on the living room floor.

I agree -- I'm a big proponent of saving up until you can afford what you want and putting at least one primo piece in each room. If you are creative, you can use filler furniture until then...think egg crates, cinder blocks, and plastic patio furniture!!!

I have a friend who is an interior designer, and she always has great ideas. One of the things she does (since she is very crafty) is to buy a piece and change it a little so it is an original. One of the things she recomends is to read magazines like Architectural Design to get ideas and try to find the cheaper way to do great things with a nice style. It is better to wait a little and have some money to have a nocely decorated house than just buy what you can afford at the moment.
