It can be a lot of things. Your safest bet is going to be to buy all new hardware. That way you can fix it once and be done with it.

What I think is probably you need to change the little plastic rings or gaskets of the lever. Just make sure to cut the water before you open up the whole thing... If that is the problem, then it will be easier than anything to change it, and very cheap.

Water is leaking out the lever that we use to turn the shower on and off. Our temporary fix is to run the water as hot as possible at the end of each shower for 2-3 mins. Then turn off and move the lever to the middle. What am I going to need in order to attempt a more professional fix? I'm going to have to turn the water off to work on the problem and would like everything I need at hand to minimize the household grumbling.
