Dimmers are definitely key to having lots of different options for creating different moods within the same room.

Track lighting on dimmers can do a good job of creating that effect too, without the fire risk.

Glades makes the fake candles now -- they actually look pretty decent. A nice compromise if you have kids.

Candles are niche, but if you have kids or pets, it's probably better to steer away from candles. They end up being fire hazards.

I have developed a certain taste for light in a room. I like it to be non invasive, and I love candles all over, rather than any bulb! I prefer indirect light, rather to be concentrated on a piece in the room and use some reflexions. Mirrors and candles make wonderful effects in a cozy room.
