I'm guessing this is your second option if you don't find a rain deflector. The only problem is that you will still need to cut into the gutter, like you would do if you were adding an outspout. (You can't just hang one up and have it work). Also, if you are shopping high end, you will want to make sure that the attachment at the top of the drain is for Western gutters, not the Asian attachment (it looks like a little house and sits above the gutter); they don't fit on most gutters here.

Personally I don't have a garden, but one of my friends has a chain on her garden that was a project done by her son. His idea was for collecting the rain water and use it for later. I think they took advantage of it for a while for watering the plants and it looks nice. He did it with a series of buckets and chains. Looks like an art installation.

Has anyone ever used rain chains instead of rain gutters? The water travels down what looks like a long line of bells to the ground. Are they just decorative or are they functional?
