They are a neat idea. If you couple up a few water heaters for your bathroom with one for everything else -- dishwasher, washer, you would probably be ok.

The downside is the the mid-range models only have enough power to run one major appliance at a time. If you want to run the washer, dishwasher and take a shower at the same time, you won't have enough power to heat the water. The other problem is that they work better in the summer than in the water and better in warmer climates than colder ones.

I live in an apartment, I don't have one, but I do know someone who created a structure made out of copper tubes and is set on the roof of his house. He lives in Arizona, and uses the sun as a water heater. So, the water passes through those tubed before getting to where it is needed, and he said it is very hot water and it lasts well into the night. But I don't know how does it work in the winter.

One of my friends is raving about a tankless water heater. Anybody have one? Can you give a short list of pros and cons?
