I think you'll start to see damage within a year. A trellis is a much better option.

The vine tends to get between the slats in the fence and pulls it apart from the frame. You don't want to plant vines along fences. At the very least run it up a trellis.

Why don't you try a black eyed susan vine instead? They don't tend to make it through the winter, even in Florida. That can help keep things much more manageable.

At the very least, pick a different kind of vine!!! Sky vine grows like wildfire in the south and the winters don't kill them. Opt for something that grows for 6-8 months and then dies. Or at the very least, spare your fence by building a trellis.

My wife wants to plant a sky vine along the wooden fence that backs our house. (The fence belongs to a church, not us). Will a vine running up a wooden fence damage it? How long before that damage kicks in?
