The decorative baskets only look good in design magazines. For the rest of us, the top turns into storage for tupperware and potato chips. That's just not very appealing. Build 'em up to the top.

Do them to the ceiling. It's a pain to have to dust on top of cabinets.

When I re-do the cabinets I want to make them ceiling high, simply because I need the extra space and now I feel it is a wasted space to collect dust!

I think it depends on how high your ceilings are. In a room with ceilings at 8-feet, you'd want to go all the way up. Otherwise your cabinets would give the room a choppy feel. I'd say at 10-feet and up, make the decision based on how much stuff you need to store.

mine go up to the ceiling and i like that. it gives me extra room, which is always a plus. though when i was doing my renovation, i was told that leaving space up there can give the room a more open look. depending on your molding choice, you can have enough room on top of the cabinets to use it as a place for knick knacks, like decorative baskets. but all in all, i am happy with my choice to go up to the ceiling.
