They sound a little high maintenance for a house with kids. Maybe when the kids leave the nest?

The biggest pain is that you have to use special cleaners on them. Use anything harsh and you hurt the granite, use soap and water and you get build up. They look nice though.

Our friend has granite countertops and kids. They had so many broken glasses that they switched over to plastic. Granite is hard so you don't have to drop stuff from very high up for it to break.

The newer homes in SoFla don't use granite as much as they used too. Corian seems to be a little more popular. Maybe it just has a more beach feel?

My mom's kitchen is all white with touches of red and the countertops are black granite. It looks fantastic! Besides it gives it a touch of elegance that increased the value of her property greatly! When I renew the kitchen, I'll try to do something like that.

Our friend is a contractor. He ditched his light colored granite countertops because they stain so easily. The only other downside, other than expense, that I've heard about is that if you drop stuff on the countertop (glass, ceramics, etc.) the stuff will break.

it came down in price over the past few years and is beautiful and strong, and it looks great in real estate ads if you are concerned about resale value of your home.

why does it seem as if granite is almost the automatic choice for countertops lately?
