I agree with everyone else, light weight fixtures make this a DIY project. Heavier ones and it's probably better to make sure that someone mounts it so it doesn't fall.

If it's just a hallway light, however, hook up the wires, drill holes to install the plate, slap up the glass cover and you should be good to go.

If the light fixtures are heavy or if you're installing a ceiling fan in a place where there's never been one before, you probably want to hire someone -- if you don't mount heavy fixtures properly, you run the risk of them falling down, breaking and/or cracking you on the head. If it's just a light weight light, it's a DIY.

should i hire an electrician to hang new fixtures, or could that be a do-it yourself job?
