I think it also helps keep the seeds from getting burnt out by the sun.

I think they do it to keep the seed from washing away if there's a heavy rain before the seeds take root.

i think it's to keep the birds from eating the seed but it might also provide general protection as the grass gets growing. i haven't bothered when i've seeded on my own, but i had a landscaper do a huge area for us once and he used the hay. i have to say, his grass grew better than mine.

does hay keep birds from eating fresh grass seed, or does it serve another purpose? i'm not sure whether i'm going to bother with it or not.
