Carpal Tunnels is no joke!!! My mom had it in her wrists and it took her a couple of years to heal up completely. Go for stuff that's egonomically sound.

You'll want to make sure everything is ergonomically correct, otherwise you'll end up spending more on doctor's bills than you would have for comfy furniture.

It might be better to put your tv in an adjacent room -- it's really hard to concentrate on work with kids and a tv as background noise.

Spend your money on a desk that's ergonomic, a comfortable chair and a good filing system. If you don't, you'll regret it. The other stuff you could pick up as you go, maybe even second-hand.

You can always be creative with the furniture, using different colors or even personalizing the pieces. My file cabinet was original "boring" beige, but now is red and blue and has different stickers that I got on the mail as junk... it looks very different and I like that everybody talks about it.

Another neat idea is to buy mostly prefab furniture from a hardware store and then hit a consignment or upscale store to pick up some accent pieces to give the room a little personality.

Ikea's ok, but most of their chairs seem to be designed to fit short people. I'm 5'10" so that doesn't work for me. If you're over, say 5'5", you probably want to give things a sit test and not just buy on looks.

check out any IKEA store. They have great solutions and nice design, adaptable for every need. If you don't have an IKEA store near you, you can check out their online catalog and maybe order from them, or at least get some ideas.
