If you don't have kids, you probably don't need it. Just be careful that the water doesn't get too hot.

You can get the tankless hot water heater attachments for shower heads too. I'm pretty sure that lets you set a maximum tempertature as well. You can usually pick them up in hardware stores, or if that fails, RV/mobile home stores.

Hey! That's a neat fix -- and certainly cheaper than springing for a hot water heater. I'll have to check it out!

My sister installed a faucet in the bathroom where the kids shower that has a controlled temperature. It will never let it go more hot than the set temperature and it has a security button for that. So, maybe that could be another solution besides havind a water heater.

one of the reasons we added a hot water heater is that it is the best way to control the water temperature coming into your house. you don't want scalding water coming through your faucets when you turn the hot all the way on, especially around children or the elderly. with a water heater, you set the temperature to a safe number and you'll be set. also, it's nice to have the back up of a hot water tank - if your power goes out, you usually will still have some hot water available. i think it also saves energy to heat a larger quantity of water once instead of using the burner every time you need hot water.

yep, i need one of these too (see water softener question .) actually, my question is, do i really need one of these? i just bought my house and the hot water comes directly from the boiler.
