I'd stay with your original plan and stain the exterior -- you'll end up redoing it a bit more often, but it seems like it would be worth the trouble.

I agree. Barn red belongs on barns not houses. If you go with paint, you should do browns, tans and maybe greens. That way your house will still blend into its surroundings.

A stain looks great, but won't last as long. If you go with paint, I'd stay away from barn red. Maybe something in an earthtone, instead? It will blend in a lot better.

A quality solid color stain typically comes with an 8-year warranty. A quality semi-transparent stain, closer to 5 years. Don't use an oil stain -- it's just for interiors. I've heard good things about Wood Guard -- which bills itself as the stain for log cabins -- and Sansin Enviro Stain. edited by southboca on 9/6/2007

stains are generally not as durable as regular paint but it's worth researching a bit more. i have a rustic paint idea though - barn red - i see a lot of that color in country settings.

i'd love to use a natural wood stain on the exterior of my house, but will that be durable enough? cleary we can't commit to repainting our whole house too often. thanks for any advice. we live in a wooded setting and i'm trying to keep the house in line with the natural beauty of our land.
