Find out what kind of grass you have and talk to your garden center guy. If that's too much bother, cutting a little longer is better than too short.

If you want to avoid raking, a general rule of thumb is to mow when your grass is dry and 3 to 3-1/2 inches tall. Never cut it shorter than 2 to 2-1/2 inches or remove more than one third of the leaf surface at any one mowing.

i'd say between 2 and 2 1/2 inches. a lot of people do 1 to 2 inches but i think that's too short. edited by allieb on 3/26/2007

what lawn mower height setting should i use to keep my grass healthy? i heard that cutting it too short is bad for it.
