But you can add in stuff like coffee grounds and eggshells. No problems there.

If you decided to go this route, just don't use meat scraps or dairy products -- neither smells very good and both seem to attract critters.

I use home-made compost. I'm basically pretty lazy, so my method is to bury each batch of fruit and veggies scraps under a thin layer of dirt in the backyard and to rake and add water periodically. In the summer, the stuff processes in 2-3 months. In the winter, closer to 6. It isn't enough to do our yard though, so I just use it for our flower beds.
