I like the wire metal racks that install into the ceiling so that you can put boxes up overhead and pegboards so that you get tools up off your work area.

I would use metal structures to place everything there is to be on all the walls available, and then sort them out according to what you use more often and what not. I wouldn't leave anything on the floor. But as someone said, plan on more storage space than what you need. You'll always need the extra space!

First, get rid of as much stuff as humanly possible. Then decide what kind of storage you need + 10%. If you do this in the opposite direction, you'll run out of space within 3 months. And lose space storing stuff that you don't even remember that you have.

you inspired me to look for ideas, since ours is a wreck, and check out everything available: http://www.builderssquare.com/shop/results.aspx?Kw=garage+organization. 350 choices in garage organization! i'll probably go with some basic metal build-it-yourself shelf units, and probably a few bike hangers, a ball storage rack, a tool organizer, and a garden tool rack. i'm focusing on getting things off the floor and onto the walls so my cars will fit without obstacles.
