It can probably be done a little less often, but the problem is that you can't do it year round in most places, it's too cold or rainy certain times of year. Picking a month and sticking to it makes it less likely that you will forget.

We do ours about once a year and that seems to work out about right.

I'm pretty sure that the problem with cracking isn't frequent power washing. The problem is that each time you power wash, you are supposed to reseal. If you are powerwashing real often, you are probably going to skimp on resealing and that can definitely lead to cracking.

As long as you hose off dirt throughout the year, you can powerwash and restain once a year.

someone told me that too frequent power washing can actually weaken the wood eventually, by causing some fine cracking. i'd like to know if this is true.

i like to do mine every year or every other year. i do it to keep it looking good, but i think quality stains also protect the wood from sun and water damage.

How often should a deck be power washed and stained? is it important to keep it in sound shape, or is purely for looks?
