Oh, and also check out the "how-to" section on this site under Carpentry/Building (http://www.builderssquare.com/HowTo.aspx#Carpentry/Building) there's a lot of info about building decks that will help you figure out how to repair your existing one.

Hi Alex,
Generally speaking the top planks can be replaced one at time without worrying about the deck collapsing when you remove it. If it's a post that you're replacing, you'll need to shore up the deck with a temporary post while you replace the rotted one. If it's a joist that's rotted, you can "sister" a new joist alongside the rotted one to add strength.

how do i determine if this is a structural issue, or just one plank of wood that i can replace on my own? i'd like to keep this a do-it-yourself job if i can. thanks.
