"Page 7 of the tiny manual (total of 10 pages including legal disclaimers) describes - with pictures, diagrams and tables - how the cleaner can be switched into three modes: (1) "QUIET" mode all the time; (2) "HIGH" all the time; and (3) "TOBACCO" mode, which runs one "HIGH" for a 8 minutes, then switches to "QUIET" for 10 minutes and shuts off. You switch between modes simply by pressing the ON/OFF button.
The last mode, "TOBACCO," is exactly what "S. Alesch 'schopfung'" describes in his/her negative review. He/she didn't even bother to spend 5 minutes reading the manual, yet complains the machine doesn't work properly and he/she might have to "sit on the phone for 3 weeks to find out" why. That kind of worthless, troll-like review infuriates me, because a perectly good product's "star-rating" suffers for it. Just had to get that off my chest.
Anyway, if you want a review:
The machine works well in "HIGH" mode, but is a little loud (like a small hair dryer). "QUIET" mode is VERY quiet (I can't hear it at all from 2 feet away) but is only useful for a couple of days before the air just gets too dirty for it. All you have to do then is switch the machine to "HIGH" for an hour or so and then back to "QUIET."
I put the machine in a nursery, and seems to do a good job on odors. I don't smoke, so I don't know how well "TOBACCO" mode works to clean the air of tobacco smoke, but I do know "TOBACCO" mode doesn't stay on long enough to clean the air as much as I want.
